DotConnectAfrica Group: 17 Years of Digital Leadership

Sophia Bekele end of year messagesAfrica’s digital transformation has been shaped by organizations that focus on long-term impact and institutional change. Among them, the DotConnectAfrica Group stands out as a key driver of digital leadership, policy innovation, and technology governance across the continent.

From its early vision in 2008 to its current global influence, the organization has consistently championed digital sovereignty, cybersecurity frameworks, and inclusive innovation.

The Origin of a Continental Digital Vision

DotConnectAfrica’s journey began with the .Africa initiative, first announced during the ICANN meeting in Paris. The idea was bold: create a continental digital identity through the .Africa domain and strengthen Africa’s role in global internet governance.

This initiative quickly gained institutional backing. Support from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Union reinforced the importance of a unified digital presence for Africa. Through the Yes2DotAfrica campaign, the initiative mobilized governments, civil society, and the African diaspora.

As a result, the .Africa application ranked among the top 50 out of nearly 1,930 global submissions, highlighting the scale and visibility of the campaign.

Expanding Influence Through Policy and Innovation

Over the years, DotConnectAfrica evolved beyond advocacy into a multi-dimensional digital policy and technology group.

Its work now spans several areas:

  • Digital policy and governance
  • AI-powered digital Services
  • Cybersecurity frameworks
  • Artificial intelligence governance policy discussions
  • Digital education and social impact initiatives

Programs such as the Miss.Africa Digital Seed Fund have supported women-led digital innovation across the continent. Meanwhile, the DCA Digital Academy has expanded digital education opportunities for thousands of Africans.

Global Engagement and Thought Leadership

In recent years, DotConnectAfrica has strengthened its global presence by participating in major policy forums across Africa, Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Latin America.

The organization has contributed to discussions on AI governance, cybersecurity standards, and digital infrastructure policy. Its policy publication on digital governance accountability was also accepted within the UN WSIS+20 framework, reinforcing its role in shaping global digital conversations.

Looking Ahead

Seventeen years after its founding, DotConnectAfrica continues to build institutional capacity that ensures technology serves people and societies.

Rather than focusing solely on apps or platforms, the organization emphasizes policy, accountability, and sustainable digital ecosystems for Africa’s future.
