DOtConnectAfrica’s Submission on Digital Governance Accountability Incorporated into UN WSIS+20 Review Process

A formal submission by DotConnectAfrica, has been accepted and published as part of the United Nations’ WSIS+20 review process. The submission presents the history of the .Africa top-level domain as a case study for strengthening accountability and transparency within global digital governance frameworks.

The input was submitted in response to a global call for contributions by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) to inform the WSIS+20 High-Level Meeting of the UN General Assembly. The published document is accessible on the official UN portal here.

The submission underscores the importance of aligning the operations of internet governance bodies with the WSIS principles of inclusivity, transparency, and a people-centered approach. It argues that these principles are fundamental to building trust and ensuring the digital future serves all stakeholders equitably.

In a recent communication with the organizers of the Digital@UNGA WSIS+20 Edition, co-convened by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), where DotConnectAfrica was invited to participate in New York, USA, Ms. Bekele connected the case’s themes to the meeting’s objectives. She highlighted that reinforcing accountable multistakeholderism is crucial for tackling contemporary digital challenges.

“It is a privilege to contribute to this significant UN review process,” stated Ms. Bekele. “The WSIS+20 forum provides a vital opportunity to reflect on past experiences to better architect a secure, inclusive, and accountable digital future. We hope the insights from this case will inform constructive dialogues.”

The full documented history of the .Africa domain initiative, which provides context for the UN submission, is available for researchers and policymakers on the DotConnectAfrica website.
