June 20, 2013
DotConnectAfrica Registry Services (Kenya) Ltd. (‘DCA Registry Services’) participated in a rigorous two-day training programme on DNSSEC.
PRLog (Press Release) – Jun. 19, 2013 – DotConnectAfrica Registry Services (Kenya) Ltd. (‘DCA Registry Services’) participated in a rigorous two-day training programme on DNSSEC that was conducted at the AFRALTI Nairobi on 11 -12 June, 2013. KeNIC, the manager of the .ke ccTLD extension and organizer of the training programme, had also sent invitations to ISOC Kenya Chapter members who also participated.
The DNSSEC training will enable DCA Registry Service staff gain essential skills in this new area, in addition to continuing professional development in registry technical and operations management.
The training was part of the DNSSEC roadshow, which emanated from the ICANN Africa Strategy, to showcase DNSSEC application within six to eight African ccTLDs during the January – June 2013 period. Countries that participated in Phase 1 of the programme include Kenya, Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria, Egypt, Tunisia, South Africa and Burundi.
The combined DNSSEC awareness and hands on-training workshop informed the participants about DNSSEC and its role in the Internet ecosystem as well as the role of the various stakeholders; business cases for its deployment and the current state of availability with respect to its overall implementation. It must be noted that DNSSEC is one of the important (critical) registry services functions under the new gTLD Program of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
DNSSEC is part of a growing technical innovation that is expected to aid the DNS industry in the African continent and globally to mitigate the increasing cyber security breaches that have been increasing at an alarming rate especially at a time when ICANN is in the process of expanding the Internet top-level domain namespace. Africa is seen as the continent of the future especially in matters of information and communications technology use, adoption and penetration. It is anticipated that DNSSEC technology will be rapidly implemented in Africa on a wider scale including IPv6 in the very near future.
The training was facilitated by Alain Patrick Aina who is one of the leading DNS business authorities in the African continent. After the DNSSEC road show the African ccTLD registry operators are expected to begin deploying DNSSEC within their registry technical systems as part of a development strategy in preparation for the anticipated increase in the demand for new domain names in the continent.
Its widely expected that the new gTLDS will be deployed under a proper system where DNSSEC is a mandatory requirement for all applicants who expect to set up and deploy a new gTLD registry operations.
DotConnectAfrica Registry Services, an affiliate of DCA Trust, has been a key player and stakeholder in increasing DNS awareness within the continent. It has been an active player in the ICANN new gTLD Program. DotConnectAfrica anticipates that such technologies will be deployed widely so that the African ccTLD operators can benefit from capacity improvements and gain increased technical competitiveness and cyber-security capabilities once the new gTLDS are deployed.
